Insight into How To Download From Youtube

Here’s how to download from YouTube

There are dozens of YouTube music-ripping sites out there, but not all of them are trustworthy. The methods below work well. However, we must warn you before moving forward: Ripping audio from YouTube is a breach of YouTube’s terms of use, which could potentially get you in trouble. There are ways to access music from YouTube without breaking the rules, such as Google’s new YouTube Music service that will likely replace Google Play Music at some point—so we recommend you consider legitimate options first. It’s also important to note that some of the many YouTube ripping sites out there use unconventional moneymaking practices like cryptomining. While we do our best to recommend services that don’t use such tactics, if you find your system running hotter or harder than usual, make sure you don’t hang around on those sites for too long.

Step 1: Copy video URL

This method can all be done in the browser (here are our favorites) without having to download any special applications or jump through any hoops. This also means it’ll work on Windows, Mac, or even a Chromebook.

The first step is to head over to the YouTube video you want to rip the audio from. Highlight the URL from your browser’s address bar, and copy it to your clipboard.

Step 2: Go to YTMP3

Open a new tab and go to the YTMP3 homepage. There are a number of online tools for ripping the audio from YouTube videos, but YTMP3 is our current favorite. It has a simple, easy-to-use interface and converts videos to MP3 fairly quickly.

Step 3: Paste Your URL Into the Search Box

Once you’ve loaded up the site, just paste your YouTube URL into the blue and white search box. The default mode for this converter site should already be set to MP3, but if you find that you also want to download a copy of the video as well as the audio from that YouTube video, you can toggle to MP4 by clicking on the MP4 button under the search box.

Once you paste your URL into the box, the site should then recognize your video, populate

the name of your video, and begin the process of converting the video to an MP3 audio file. It’s worth noting here that YTMP3 can only convert videos “up to a length of 2 hours.”

Step 4: Download your audio

Once the conversion has been completed, you’ll then be presented with three options: Downloading your new audio file directly to your computer, sending the new file to your Dropbox, or converting your next video file. Hit the Download button to download the new audio file to your computer.

Note: When you hit the Download button, you may see a pop-up ad (in the form of a new browser tab) that may appear asking you to “download Flash” (or it could be a general ad for something else) — this pop-up appears to be harmless, but you still shouldn’t click on it or interact with it. Just close the tab. This kind of pop-up ad seems to be common with a number of YouTube converter sites. And while YTMP3 seems to work fine for now, you should always exercise caution when using it or other sites like it. If something seems off, leave the site immediately.

Desktop alternative

Online services are great at downloading and converting YouTube videos, but because of YouTube violations, they tend to get taken down from time to time, leaving you trying to find other alternatives. Desktop applications don’t have that problem, and our favorite of them all is 4K Video Downloader. Although its name might suggest otherwise, this tool isn’t just for downloading high-quality videos—it can also be used for ripping audio from them as well.

The instructions are fairly similar to the steps above, except that you’ll be doing it within a traditional desktop program, rather than a browser window. 4K Video Downloader is available for use on Windows, MacOS, and Ubuntu.

At some point, we’ll all experience being sucked into the black hole that is YouTube. Minutes or hours can go by as you browse through videos uploaded by everyday people like you and me. Some are funny, others useful, or (believe it or not) thought-provoking.

Whether you consume most of your videos on YouTube or another service like Vimeo, downloading a favorite video for offline viewing or personal use has probably crossed your mind.

Before we continue, note that policies for the many video Web sites vary, so review those policies and move forward at your own risk. Distributing copyrighted material without authorization is illegal in the United States and many other countries. CBS Interactive does not encourage or condone the illegal duplication or distribution of copyrighted content. Before copying or distributing any content online, make sure you have the legal right to do so.

Keeping that in mind, here are three tools that let you download video from just about any video-sharing site.

1. KeepVid. This is likely the fastest way to grab just about any video from the Web. YouTube, DailyMotion, Megavideo, Metacafe, and Vimeo are just a few of the sites compatible with KeepVid.

Copy the URL of the video you want to download, head to, and paste it in the bar at the top. Then click “Download” to the right of that bar. Do not click the large green “Download” button.

It will load for a few seconds, then you’ll have the option to download the video in FLV (Flash), MP4, or WebM format. If you don’t know which one to pick, go with MP4, as it has the greatest compatibility.

2. NetVideoHunter (Firefox). This Firefox browser add-on also works with many popular video sites, including Facebook. Once you install the extension from the add-on site, a button will be added to your toolbar.

To use it, head to a page with embedded video. You’ll notice that the NetVideoHunter button will flash, alerting you that video on the page can be downloaded. Click the button, and click Download next to the video you want to save.

Unfortunately, I haven’t discovered any reliable Chrome extensions similar to NetVideoHunter.

3. Desktop software. As a third and final option, you may download a program for your Mac or Windows computer dedicated to downloading Web video. For Mac, check out MacTubes. Windows users can try Free YouTube Downloader. Both programs have gotten solid reviews and work as advertised.
